Paste the article you already wrote

The topic box asks "What is this post about?" — a question, which invites a subject. People kept answering it with an essay.

One user pasted a finished article. Another pasted a bio. A third pasted copy fourteen times. They were not using it wrong. They arrived with the writing already done, and the box asked them to summarise it.

What happens now

A long paste is recognised, and you are asked which you want: your sentences, or something new.

Choose yours and you get a list — each of your sentences, the slide it becomes, and anything that did not fit struck through rather than quietly dropped. Keep it, edit it, or drop it. Nothing generates until you say so, so looking costs you nothing at all.

The rule that makes it safe

Every output is your input minus characters. Not paraphrased, not tightened, not put in a house voice. If a line will not fit on a slide, words come out, and the words that came out are shown to you struck through.

That is a rule the code actually enforces rather than a promise in a blog post. Your sentence is still your sentence.

A deletion can still lie

This is the part that took the longest to get right, and it is worth explaining because it is the thing a shortener gets wrong.

"Open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday" cut after the second item is shorter and false. It is a deletion, and it changes what you claimed. Nobody reading the slide would know.

So it never breaks a comma list. And where nothing can safely come out, the row says so and hands the sentence back rather than guessing at it.

One user's five steps came back with three untouched for exactly that reason. That is the feature working, not failing — and it took us a while to be comfortable saying so, because a tool that sometimes answers "you do this one" looks worse in a demo and is better in real life.

The budget, and the ceiling

A slide holds about 120 characters at a readable size. That is not a limit we invented; it is what the renderer can set without shrinking type to nothing.

Ten slides maximum. An article with more good lines than that is two posts, which is usually the better answer anyway.

Step by step: Turn an article into a carousel.
