Your carousel is already a video

Your carousel is already a video

Vertical video is where the audiences went, and most small businesses answered it by not posting vertical video. That is a reasonable response. Video is a different craft, a different set of tools and an evening you did not have.

But look at what a carousel actually is. Five or six frames, read in order, each one held on screen for as long as it takes to read. Now look at what most good Reels actually are: five or six frames, read in order, each one held on screen for as long as it takes to read.

They are the same object. The only real difference is who controls the timing — the reader's thumb, or the file.

What we built, and what we deliberately did not

Any carousel in PostPop now exports as a 1080×1920 MP4. Same slides, same brand, same post. Nothing is redesigned and nothing is re-rendered.

What we did not build is an animation tool. Your slides do not fly in, spin, or morph into each other. There is no timeline, there are no key-frames, and there is nothing to learn. The frames are the frames.

What video adds is pacing, and pacing turned out to be the entire problem.

The thing that makes it watchable is boring

Hold every slide for the same three seconds and you get a slideshow. Everyone can tell. It is not that three seconds is the wrong number — it is that one number cannot be right for a two-word cover and a twenty-six-word instruction at the same time.

So each slide is held for as long as its own words take to read. A real five-slide deck we exported while building this came out at 2.3s for the cover, 3.1s for a short line, 6.0s for a long step, 2.4s for another short line and 2.1s for the closing card.

Those numbers differ because the slides differ. The six-second one is a step with a sentence in it that nobody could read in three. The 2.3-second cover is four words, and holding it longer would just be dead air.

It is a small idea and it is the whole feature. A video where the timing was decided by someone who read the slides feels different from one where it was not, even to a viewer who could not tell you why.

Three decisions worth stating plainly

It costs one post. Not one per slide and not one per second. A carousel exported as a video is the same post it already was — the same answer we give for a ten-slide carousel, and it would be strange to give a different one here.

It has no sound. On purpose. Every platform has a music library with the rights already cleared, and the track you want is the one you pick there. A song baked into the file by us would be the wrong one legally and creatively. You add sound at upload; it is one tap, and it is a tap you were going to make anyway.

We still do not publish. You get the file. PostPop does not post for you, does not schedule, and does not connect to your accounts — we wrote a whole piece about that in September and nothing here contradicts it. A video is a file. Files are what we make.

The part where we were wrong

Before building any of it we wrote down why it might be a bad idea, and the main reason was cost. Video files are large, encoding is slow, and a per-export cost that scales with file size is the kind of thing that quietly ruins a flat price. The estimate in our own planning document was about 8 MB a video.

Then we measured. A real five-slide 1080×1920 deck encodes in about two seconds and comes out at 165 KB — roughly a third the size of the PNGs it is made from, because the slides share most of their pixels and that is exactly what video compression is for.

We were wrong by a factor of about forty, in the direction that killed the objection. Worth saying out loud, because the estimate nearly stopped the feature before anyone tried it, and it had been sitting in a document for weeks looking like a fact.

Try it on something you already made

That is the part we like most about this. There is nothing to set up and no new skill to acquire. Open a carousel you made last month — one you already know worked — and export it again as a video.

It is the same post. It just moves now.

Want the step by step? Export a carousel as a video walks through it in about thirty seconds.
